WLNG
From Freeradio
WLNG broadcast to Scunthorpe in the late 1980s.
Broadcasts took place on Tuesday evenings from 8pm to 10pm, on 104.9 FM. Format was pop music plus community information, with adverts for Scunthorpe local businesses. The aim of WLNG was to show that a community radio station covering Scunthorpe would be viable, and to put pressure on the authorities to advertise a licence for that area.
Jingles were retro-sounding, reminiscent of those of the 1960's offshore pirates.
At one point in 1987, WLNG had a competition in which listeners were to suggest what the initials WLNG stood for. (Can't remember who won, what WLNG did stand for, or what the prize was).
Also in 1987, on a more negative note, WLNG is understood to have had a severe disagreement with Bradford pirate Radio Veronica Bradford. This intensified to the point where Veronica broadcast a rather cruel spoof advert for WLNG.
However, WLNG's programmes were professionally done and very listenable. Also, their powerful transmitter gave WLNG a wide coverage area, as far as Clowne.
Quite frequent fact-sheets and bulletins were issued by WLNG, which were often quite informative. Near the 1987 election, WLNG's bulletin controversially urged readers to vote Conservative.
WLNG was last heard in 1988.
To this date, as far as we know, Scunthorpe still has not been awarded a local licence.
