Super pirate

A "super pirate" tends to be defined by the quality of its programmes and quality/power of its transmitted signal, often on a par with that of licenced stations. Generally, a super pirate will operate 24 hours, or at least daily.

The term "super pirate" was first coined in the 1980s to describe the large, commercial Eireann pirates such as Radio Nova (Dublin), Sunshine Radio and Q102. But the term could also be applied to several non-Irish pirates, for example, most offshore pirates from the 1960s onwards would probably fit the definition of "super pirate".

In addition, some of the larger UK land-based pirates - eg Radio Jackie of London (1970s and early 80s), Solar Radio and LWR (London) and PCRL (Birmingham) could easily fit the description of "super pirates".
