Sheffield
From Freeradio
Sheffield is the county town of the people's republic of South Yorkshire and is often refered to as the Steel City. What a lot of people don't know is that it was home to large number of pirates during the 1980's and 1990's, these stations often broadcast in the section of band above 105MHz, an area of the FM band which was completely un-used and clear of legal radio clutter. Being built on 7 hills (on the edge of the Pennines and the Peak District), reception of FM stations from relatively far-afield is common in many parts of Sheffield, restricting the availability of clear frequencies.
Between 1994-1996 as many as 5 or 6 could been heard on an evening, in the later 1990's many more legal stations came on air, both local and regional services, this left fewer and fewer clear frequencies. Though the reasons for the demise of the pirate radio scene in Sheffield have never quite been explained, as a thriving pirate radio scene still exists in London, dispite there been internet radio and lack of clear frequencies to broadcast on.
