Radio Zoe
From Freeradio
Radio Zoe used to broadcast to Clowne, Derbyshire, in 1989.
The frequency used was approximately 102.3 FM.
The format was dance music, from the early 1980s through to 1989.
Radio Zoe had live broadcasts.
The main DJs on Radio Zoe were Al Capone and Bruce Gordon (not his real name).
History
The operators of Radio Zoe were students at the time, so broadcasts took place during college holidays. The first broadcasts took place a week during Easter. During this period, broadcasts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, from 8pm into the night, took place for 3 or 4 weeks.
In June, a one-off broadcast took place on 98.0 FM, announcing as Pulsar 98. This closed abruptly after about 1 hour, following reports that the frequency may have causing Interference to emergency services. Ironically, despite the lower transmitter power of 5W, Pulsar 98 had better coverage than Radio Zoe due to a better Antenna being used.
Then, in early August, Radio Zoe began broadcasting again, this time on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8pm into the night (Although non-stop music test transmissions took place 8pm, sometimes starting before 7pm). It was at this time that Radio Zoe began broadcasting in stereo.
In September, suddenly the station's format changed. New DJ's, notably PWD, were heard on the station. Heavy metal music was added to the playlist, at least during the first few hours of broadcasting. The following week, the station's broadcasting days changed to Wednesdays and Fridays.
From that point, Radio Zoe only lasted about 2 weeks before closing down forever. Although some of the DJs were later to be heard on Clowne pirate WBMX.
Technical
Radio Zoe used a 25W Transmitter, into a "slim Jim" antenna mounted approximately 10 feet above ground level.
Studio equipment consisted of a Dual CS-505 turntable, a Realistic cassette deck, a Tandy microphone, and a Maplin mixer.
By early August, a stereo encoder was obtained and Radio Zoe had begun broadcasting in Stereo.
Radio Zoe was heard as far as Chesterfield and Rotherham.
