Power-play
From Freeradio
A power-play is a record which features prominently on a radio station's playlists, generally played at the beginning (or sometimes the end) of each programme or each hour.
Reasons for power-playing a record
Promotion of new or local talent.
Support of an artist or group which has supported or sponsored the station, or is associated with an organisation which has. Examples include Tamworth RSL Palace FM's power-play "Have You Seen Jason", recorded by a band based at the Palace Media Centre in which Palace FM was based.
As a paid advert for the record - although this is often illegal ("payola"), especially if not admitted as such. Examples include Laser 558's Spotlight Songs (announcement following each Spotlight Song: "Laser Spotlight Songs are paid adverts"). Records alleged to have been promoted in this way include the 1987 hit "House Arrest" by Krush.
