Heatwave
From Freeradio
Heatwave Community Radio of Nottingham was first heard in 1988, on around 105 FM, though in the mid-1990's settled on a freqency of 87.9.
Format was black West Indian, mostly reggae music played but also dance and soul. It was a commercial station with adverts, some for discos featuring Heatwave Community Radio DJs. A common venue mentioned for these events was the Marcus Garvey Centre, in Nottingham.
From late 1980s into early 1990s, Heatwave managed 24/7 broadcasts for much of the time. It's original studio was at the back of a bakery in a notorious area of the city which had become almost a no-go zone for police following the race-riots of the early 1980's and thus it remained 'above the law' for many years.
Heatwave had a strong signal, often heard as far as Clowne.
Discussion phone-in programmes were sometimes aired; On afternoon of 16/1, was a phone-in which featured a discussion on the new world order (not the wrestling organization of that name!)
On New Years Eve 1988-89, Heatwave remained on-air - despite many stations in some areas (eg Birmingham) closing down to apply for community radio licences.
Not noted since 2000. Not sure if still on-air.
