Ex-pirate

An ex-pirate can be a former pirate radio station, especially one which has now obtained a licence to broadcast legally. Or it can be a DJ or presenter who started on pirate radio, before moving on to legal broadcasting.


Ex-pirate radio stations

Angel Radio of Waterlooville started as a pirate in the 1990s. Now an ILR, broadcasting mainly to older listeners.

Radio Caroline, the famous offshore pirate from the 1960s to 1990. Now on satellite and the internet, and broadcasting on various RSLs.

Radio Jackie of south-west London. A pirate from the 1970s to 1985, became the South-west London ILR in the early 2000s. Now broadcasting on 107.8 FM and via the internet.

KBFM, an Asian ex-pirate from Leeds, now does occasional RSL broadcasts [1].

Kiss FM London started as a pirate in the 1980s. Now a London ILR on 100.0 FM.

London Greek Radio (LGR) started as a pirate. Now an ILR in London.

Notorious FM from Derbyshire broadcast on FM from 2006 until their raid in May 2007. They have now become Notorious Online[2], a web radio station.

Solar Radio of London. A pirate in the 1980s, now broadcasting on satellite and via the internet.

Starforce FM of Clowne - now re-launched as the web radio station Starforce Radio International

Sunrise Radio, the Asian pirate, started as a London pirate [3]. Now an ILR in London and Bradford.

Sunshine Radio of Ludlow started as a pirate. Now the Ludlow ILR on 855 kHz MW.

Radio Veronica of Holland. An offshore pirate from the early 1960s until 1974, now broadcasting legally on FM in Holland.


Ex-pirate presenters

Charlie Wolf started his UK broadcasting career on the offshore pirate Laser 558. Went on to DJ on various ILR's (including GWR) and Atlantic 252, now on Talk Sport.
